Health Guidelines From Qura'n And Sunnah

Shahid Athar, M.D.

This article is not about the glory of Islamic Medicine of past 1000 years which produced great physicians like al-Razi and Ibn-Sina. This article is also not about virtues of honey, the center point of discussion in most of the articles written these days on Islamic Medicine. This also is not an article saying that since science has now confirmed certain Quranic statements, therefore Quran must be a divine book. To the contrary, we begin with the belief that all Quranic statements are true, science has confirmed some of them in the past, and will confirm the rest in the future. If science has not confirmed it yet, it needs to examine its data more deeply, or may be repeat the experiment, rather than question the authenticity of Quran.

The Quran is not a book of medicine or of health sciences, but in it there are hints which lead to guidelines in health and diseases. Prophet Mohammed (P.B.U.H.) has set as an example to the mankind so his traditions in matters of health and personal hygienic are also a guide for his followers.

We start our discussion with the following verse:

"Everything good that happens to you (O Man) is from God, everything bad that happens to you is from your own actions". 4:79

Therefore, the pathology (disease) is defined by the famous pathologist William Boyd as physiology (natural state) gone wrong. It is our tampering with natural process that leads to unnatural outcomes.

Human body can be compared to some degree with a machine created by man. The fascinating tape recorder has many mechanical and electronic parts but life does not come to it till electrical current is passed through. Similarly, in the components of human body there arc the anatomic parts and fluids but also the spirit (the soul). As the care of a machine requires keeping it clean, giving it some rest, and passing electricity of proper voltage, and using it carefully and wisely, so are the requirement for the body and of the body as whole.

Before we come to the physical care of human body, let us talk about the spiritual care.

The spiritual care

The spiritual care involves the acts of worship. The problem is that Iman cannot be translated into belief, nor Salaat into prayer, Nor Wadu into washing hand, face and feet nor; Sawm into fasting nor Sakat into charity nor Haii into pilgrimage to Mecca. T'hey are entitles in themselves.

A. Iman:

The belief in God is the first and foremost important need for spiritual stability. Belief in God includes belief in his aU attributes, his angels, his books, the day of judgement, the heaven and hell and belief that - all good and bad is within his reach. Imam Rumi has called faith being superior to prayers. In illness, according to Imam Ghazai, the awareness of God increases and man becomes closer to God by realizing his own weakness. Without true belief, neither our prayer, nor charity, nor fasting nor pilgrimage will be accepted. The essence of belief is to rid ourselves of all false Gods around us, or within us, and to worship no one except God alone.

B.Salat:

There are three health aspects of Salat

I. Wadu: Washing all the exposed areas of the body, hand, feet, face, mouth, nostrils etc. 5 times a day is a healthy preventive procedure. Hand washing is being emphasized more and more in hospitals now in order to prevent spread of germs. However non-Muslims did not know that hand- washing is so important - it has been ordered in Qu'ran (5:7) 1400 years ago. And for complete cleanliness bathing is advised (4:43)

2. Recitation of Quran: Has a healing effect on body, mind and heart. These healing effects are due to the effect of sound (Echo) and the meaning. The letter Alif resounds unto the Echoes to heart and the letter YA resounds unto Echoes to the pineal gland in the brain.

"O Mankind: There has come to you a direction front your Lord and a healing for the (disease) in your hearts - and for those who believe a guidance and mercy !!"
10:57

"We sent down in the Quran that which is healing and a mercy to those who believe: to the unjust it causes nothing but loss after loss". The movement in Salaat are mild, uniform, and involve all muscles and joints. The caloric output is desired to keep the energy balance."
17:82

C: Zakat (Charity):

The word itself means purification and growth. Here it is meant to imply the purification of legitimately earned wealth. Many of our crimes are committed with money or for love of money, and in the love of money one becomes violent in behavior.

And he is violent in his love of wealth:
100:8

In Islam the ownership of wealth belongs to God. We are the disposer of that trust. Therefore, this concept establishes peace at heart and our behavior in the loss of money or unusual gain, In either way, we thank God.

D. Sawm:

The Islamic fasting: Islamic fasting is prescribed as way training of our mind, and body in self-restraints.

"O you who believe is prescribed to you, as it was prescribed
to those before you, so that you can learn self-restraint. "
2:183

Therefore, during the period of fast one may not only get rid of nibbling food, coffee, smoking but also of anger and excessive sexual passion.
In fact, the fast not only gives rest to stomach but also stabilizes the secretion of harmones which control our behavior.

E. Hajj (Pilgrimage to Mecca):

The morale is Prophet lbrahim's submission and absolute surrender to God's will, the opportunity for repentance, and the social and political gathering of the Ummah depecting brotherhood, and equality. However this can be used for programming and testing us for physical endurance, a requirement for all able men and women. The long walks, the heat, the sun, the thirst, the physical exercise, etc. is to remind us of the day of judgement. We should perform Hajj when young and physically well rather than wait for the old age. We should keep ourselves in good shape before and years after the Hajj.

The maintenance of the physical structure in which the spirit resides

After describing pillars of faith as a basis for the spiritual health, let us talk about the maintenance of the physical structure in which the spirit resides.

(A) Nutrition:

Allah loves his creations so much that he is concerned even with what we eat and put in our body. Our muscles, bones, lungs, liver, brain and secretions are made from the raw product we feed it. If we provide the factory with junk raw products, the factory will not produce tough bones, strong muscles, good pump (heart) and clean pipes (vessels).

"O you mankind: Eat of what is lawful and good on earth.
2: 168

"Eat of the things which god has provided for you lawful
and good, but fear God in whom you believe". Forbidden
to us are dead meat, blood and flesh of swine (5:4) and intoxicants (5:93 and 2:219). 5:91

Science so far has not confirmed any beneficial effects to the prohibitions.
The blood and meat of the dead could be full of germs and other harmful elements like antibodies. The pork meat is high in cholesterol, salt and may have worms, and alcohol and other intoxicants cloud our mentation, our inhibition and interfere with our normal capacity of judging good and bad. Therefore, a person under the influence of alcohol may want to take off his dress, engage in unlawful sexual acts, become violent and abusive without even knowing what he is doing. On medical damages due to alcohol, whole books have been written.

The second component in nutrition (after Permission of the lawful and probation of the unlawful) is the moderation in the lawful.

Obesity is a major American tragedy, a form of malnutrition, affecting million of people, of all age. 99% of obesity is due to overeating. Allah advises as to be moderate in quantity.

" But waste not by excess for God loves not the wasters."
7:31

"Eat of the good things we have provided for your sustenance, but commit no excess therein, lest my wrath should justly descend on you, and those whom descends my wrath do perish indeed."
20:81

According to one Hadith of Prophet Mohammed (P.B.U.H.) we are advised to leave one third of our stomach empty after finishing the meal. I understood this Hadith only when I broke my blender/mixer in the kitchen after stuffing it to the top and then turning the machine on. After all, what is stomach, if not a blender, grinder, mixer and food processor, all in one !!

Certain types of food i.e. fruits are especially emphasized in Quran
(36:57, 43:73, 16:67, 50:68)

"And the fruits of date palm and grapes you get wholesome
drink and nutrition: Behold in this is a sign for those
who are wise."
16:67

Fruits are low in calorie, high in vitamins and minerals, and fiber and sugar is fructose and not sucrose. In a recent study by Dr. Anderson fructose has been shown to cause no rise in blood sugar and even lowers the high blood sugar of diabetics. Honey is fructose.

Cleanliness:

Allah is pure and likes purity. He is clean and likes cleanliness. Therefore, cleanliness of body and mind is stressed in Quran (4:43, 5:7). Miswak (brushing teeth) is not a new invention of last 200 years. This was stressed as part of our daily routine by Prophet Mohammed (P.B.U.H.). He also advised us on flossing (khilal) as now being advised by all the dentist. In fact, he is known to have said that if it was not hardship for Muslims, he would have advised miswak before each prayer i.e. 5 times a day. Cleanliness of our mind is prerequisite for total creaminess (body and mind).

Value of exercise in maintaining health

Though we do not find much in Quran about specific exercise, recommendation, the Prophet's (P.B.U.H.) Iife was full of recommendations. advised all Muslims to teach their children swimming, archery and horse riding. He, himself used to walk at fast pace even race with his wife, Ayesha (Ra). Most importantly, he used to work with his hands whether at home, in the kitchen, or with his companions collecting wood for fire, or fighting during wars etc.

It is a pity that Muslim men and women have become sedentary and, I because of excessive consumption of starches, obesity has crept into them. We should keep ourselves fit to go for jihad, and feel healthy in peacetime.

The State of disease

Many of the common chronic illnesses, coronary heart disease, hyper-tension, diabetes, peptic ulcer disease, obesity and depression have also common man-made etiology, that is rich food, too much food, too much salt, too much sugar, smoking, stress and alcoholism. If we give up excessive salt, sugar and cholesterol from our diet, and do not drink and smoke, and be active, it is possible that - the pump (heart) won't be rusted from inside.

What should a Muslim do when disease is confirmed

A. Accept it as a will of God as kaffara for his sin, and ask him to remove the affliction.

"If God touches thee with affliction, none can remove it- but He: if He touches thee with happiness He has power over all thing." 6:17

B. Many Muslims won't seek early medical attention, contrary to the Prophet's practice and teaching. In Christianity there is a sect believing in faith healing who have let their members die rather than go to the physician.

Usamah Bin Shareek (Ra) Reports "I was with the Prophet (P.B.U.H.) and some Arabs came to him asking "O Messenger of Allah, do we take medicine for any disease.-"-He said, "Yes, 0 You servants of Allah take medicine as Allah (SWT) has not created a disease without creating a cure except for one. They asked which one, he replied old age'.

C. Increase your knowledge of health and disease, of medications and side effects. This knowledge is not a monopoly of doctors. You can have it, and use it in preventing the illness, recognizing it early when symptoms appear, seeking early medical attention, then monitoring the course of disease, implementing the treatment (i.e. knowledge of diet for diabetics) and recognizing side effects of the medicine. Those of my patients who do as the above, make me very happy that I can trust their health to them as they do trust it to me.

In summary, our healthy body is a gift from God, we are the trustees, we should not misuse it, nor provide wrong raw product for the factory. and should keep superb maintenance of this delicate and sensitive machine, in order to enjoy it will be the container of our soul.

The Advices of Luqman to his Son

12. And indeed We bestowed upon Luqmân AlHikmah (wisdom and religious understanding, etc.) saying: "Give thanks to Allâh," and whoever gives thanks, he gives thanks for (the good of) his ownself. And whoever is unthankful, then verily, Allâh is AllRich (Free of all wants), Worthy of all praise.

13. And (remember) when Luqmân said to his son when he was advising him: "O my son! Join not in worship others with Allâh. Verily! Joining others in worship with Allâh is a great Zûlm (wrong) indeed.[]

14. And We have enjoined on man (to be dutiful and good) to his parents. His mother bore him in weakness and hardship upon weakness and hardship, and his weaning is in two years give thanks to Me and to your parents, unto Me is the final destination[].

15. But if they (both) strive with you to make you join in worship with Me others that of which you have no knowledge, then obey them not, but behave with them in the world kindly, and follow the path of him who turns to Me in repentance and in obedience. Then to Me will be your return, and I shall tell you what you used to do.

16. "O my son! If it be (anything) equal to the weight of a grain of mustard seed, and though it be in a rock, or in the heavens or in the earth, Allâh will bring it forth. Verily, Allâh is Subtle (in bringing out that grain), WellAware (of its place).

17. "O my son! AqimisSalât (perform AsSalât), enjoin (people) for AlMa'rûf (Islâmic Monotheism and all that is good), and forbid (people) from AlMunkar (i.e. disbelief in the Oneness of Allâh, polytheism of all kinds and all that is evil and bad), and bear with patience whatever befall you. Verily! These are some of the important commandments ordered by Allâh with no exemption.

18. "And turn not your face away from men with pride, nor walk in insolence through the earth. Verily, Allâh likes not each arrogant boaster[].

19. "And be moderate (or show no insolence) in your walking, and lower your voice. Verily, the harshest of all voices is the voice (braying) of the ass."

Warning about Internet sites that distort the Qur’aan

Question:
Salam o Aleikum,
A friend of mine brought to my attention this Web site where the guy changed the verses of the Qoran and says it is the Qoran.
This is the site: XXXXXXX
What can we do to stop this?
I have a question if anybody can answer. I have a christain friend who wants me to go to her wedding where I know they will say "the three" and "son of god" during the ceremony. What does a muslim do in that situation, does he go to the ceremony or just the party afterwards. Also what if somebody converts to Islam and her sister is getting married (who is still christain) does that person attend the ceremony?
Thank you very much and please cite your sources.

Answer:

Praise be to Allah.

Before answering this question, we should advise you of the importance of wisdom in denouncing evil, and of being careful not to inadvertantly promote anti-Islamic websites so that everyone will go and read them, because this will indirectly contribute to the promotion of these worthless people who claim to imitate the Qur’aan.

Producing anything like the Qur’aan is impossible, because Allaah challenged anyone to do this. This challenge was issued to the most brilliant and eloquent Arab poets at the time when the Qur’aan was revealed, which was also the time when Arabic eloquence was at its peak. Allaah said (interpretation of the meaning): “Let them then produce a recital like unto it (the Qur’aan) if they are truthful.” [al-Tur 52:34]

When they could not do this, Allaah challenged them to produce ten soorahs like its soorahs: “Or they say: ‘He (Muhammad) forged it (the Qur’aan).’ Say: ‘Bring you then ten forged soorahs (chapters) like unto it, and call whomsoever you can, other than Allah (to your help), if you speak the truth!’” [Hud 11:13 – interpretation of the meaning].

When they could not do this, Allah challenged them to produce just one soorah that contained the same eloquence and wisdom as the Qur’aan. He said (interpretation of the meaning): “Or do they say: ‘He (Muhammad) has forged it’? Say: ‘Bring then a soorah (chapter) like unto it, and call upon whomsoever you like, besides Allah, if you are truthful!” [Yoonus 10:38]

Allah called on them to seek help from whoever they wanted, and to accept the challenge. He said (interpretation of the meaning): “And if you (Arab pagans, Jews, Christians) are in doubt concerning that which We have sent down to Our slave (Muhammad), then produce a soorah of the like thereof and call your witnesses (supporters and helpers) besides Allah, if you are truthful.” [al-Baqarah 2:23]

When they were unable to do this, Allah informed them that they would never be able to do it, no matter who they called upon to help them. He said (interpretation of the meaning): “Say: ‘If mankind and jinn were together to produce the like of this Qur’aan, they could not produce the like thereof, even if they helped one another.’” [al-Isra’ 17:88]

There is no one except Allah who can produce the like of the Qur’aan, because the Qur’aan, as He says, is “a Book, the Verses whereof are perfected and then explained in detail from One Who is All-Wise and Well-Acquainted (with all things).” [Hud 11:1 – interpretation of the meaning].

When some liars did try to imitate the Qur’aan they came up with ridicualous nonsense that would make children laugh, let alone mature and intelligent adults. For example, the liar Musaylimah said: “O frog, daughter of two frogs, croak as much as you want, your upper part is in the water and your lower part is in the mud.” This is an example of the kind of thing said by him and other pretenders to Prophethood. (See Sayd al-Khaatir by Ibn al-Jawzi, p. 404).

Some forms of falsehood may deceive some of the people because of their ignorance and lack of understanding of the rules of grammar and accepted styles of eloquence in Arabic. But anyone who has intelligence and common sense should at least be able to see the difference and realize that these made-up words cannot possibly be Qur’aan. If we look at the Website referred to in the question, we see that kufr is quite clearly mentioned in these fabricated soorahs, such as the statement that the Messiah is the son of God or is God, and the promotion of the evil madhhab of Raafidah (a kind of Shi’ah), and other such nonsense. There are also some weird contradictions, for example, these liars say in the so-called sixth aayah of the so-called “soorah al-tajassud”: “Exalted be He above taking any of His creation as a son,” but then we find in the so-called ninth aayah of the so-called “soorah al-eemaan” the words: “You are he, the son of God, truly; in you we believe.” But verily Allah has spoken the truth when He said (interpretation of the meaning): “Do they not then consider the Qur’aan carefully? Had it been from other than Allah, they would surely have found therein much contradictions.” [al-Nisaa’ 4:82]

You also find other silly comments in these made-up soorahs, such as the claim that Allah permitted His Prophet to change whatever he wanted in the Qur’aan, as in the so-called sixth aayah of the so-called “soorah al-wasaaya”: “Abrogate whatever you want to abrogate of the commands that We have given you, for We permit you to make changes to Our decisions”!

Every Muslim will realize the extent of the lies contained in these words that come from this mind that is driven by ulterior motives. Have you ever seen anything more foolish than these words? Allah has told us to adhere to His Book and put it into practice, as He says (interpretation of the meaning): “And this is a blessed Book which We have sent down, so follow it and fear Allah, that you may receive mercy.” [al-An’aam 6:155]

He commanded His Messenger to adhere to the Qur’aan, saying (interpretation of the meaning): “So hold you (Muhammad) to that which is inspired in you. Verily, you are on a Straight Path.” [al-Zukhruf 43:43].

Allah warned His Messenger not to fail in conveying the message complete and unaltered, as He said (interpretation of the meaning): “Verily, they were about to tempt you away from that which We have revealed unto you (O Muhammad), to fabricate something other than it against Us, and then they would certainly have taken you for a friend! And had We not made you stand firm, you would nearly have inclined to them a little. In that case, We would have made you taste a double portion (of punishment) in this life and a double portion (of punishment) after death. And then you would have found none to help you against Us” [al-Isra’ 17:73-75] and “… if he (Muhammad) had forged a false saying concerning Us (Allah), We surely should have seized him by his right hand (or with power and might), and then certainly should have cut off his life artery (aorta)” [al-Haaqqah 69:44-46]. Having said all this, how can there be any so-called soorah that says the messenger has the right to abrogate whatever he wants in the Qur’aan and that he has the authority to change or omit whatever rules he wants??

The only One Who can abrogate whatever He wants of the Qur’aan is the One Who revealed it, may He be glorified, as He says (interpretation of the meaning): “Allah blots out what He wills and confirms (what He wills). And with Him is the Mother of the Book” [al-Ra’d 13:39];

“Whatever a Verse (revelation) We abrogate or cause to be forgotten, We bring a better one or similar to it. Know you not that Allah is able to do all things?” [al-Baqarah 2:106].

We, like our Messenger, are obliged to understand and implement the Qur’aan without distorting, omitting or changing anything. Allah said (interpretation of the meaning): “(This is) a Book which We have sent down to you, full of blessings that they may ponder over its Verses, and that men of understanding may remember.” [Saad 38:29].

We have seen in the false soorahs quoted on that Internet website a real example of what is referred to in the aayah (interpretation of the meaning): “And verily, among them is a party who distort the Book with their tongues (as they read), so that you may think it is from the Book, but it is not from the Book, and they say: ‘This is from Allah,’ but it is not from Allah; and they speak a lie against Allah while they know it.” [Aal ‘Imraan 3:78].

We ask Allah to make His Religion and His Book prevail and to make His friends victorious, as We ask Him to defeat and humiliate His enemies and cause them to fail. May Allah bless our Prophet Muhammad.

Islam Q&A
Sheikh Muhammed Salih Al-Munajjid

The long journey to be a muslim

Dian Utami
United Kingdom

This lovely couple are my dear friends, Mrs Emi and Mr Mike Daly. I feel privileged to be a witness of their happy moments a couple of months ago, as Mike was saying his syahadah for the first time, in a mosque in Cranfield University.

It was no easy journey for them. They were married for 29 years, both still in their own respective religions. Mike comes from a devout Irish Catholic family, and up until a month before he finally embracing Islam he still regularly went to his church.

While Mrs Emi is always a practising muslim ever since she was little. But living the life as a foreigner in UK, faraway from her homeland and her own family she struggled to integrate Islamic concept in all aspects of her life. Just in the last few years she rediscovered the beauty and the perfection of her religion.

And just then she felt an urgent, almost desperate need, to persuade her husband to become a muslim. Because she loves him, and she wants to be with him not only in this world, but also in the Hereafter. Because she wants Allah to be pleased with them. And because of the doctrine in his religion, Mike believes also in life after death, and that they have to be in the same faith to be rejoined in the Paradise.

She asked help from some of her trusted friends to talk and discuss anything about the principles of Islam with her and her husband. She also continuously prayed for the Lord to give her husband 'hidayah' or guidance. She didn't want to put her husband under pressure, and Mike was never a person to push into doing something he doesn't believe in.

The road she was taken there was long and difficult. But she persevered, and Mike has also done his part of deep thinking, learning, and soul searching. There was a time when both of them felt downhearted and discouraged. Somehow Mike knew that this is the right path to follow, but there were a few things that really concerned him. His parents have passed away, would he ever meet them again if he changed his religion? Can he still pray for them? Would he be able to do all that Islam asked him to do? He's such a shy and reserved man that sometime it was difficult to know what's going on in his mind or what he really wanted to know about Islam.

After about a year, he suddenly stopped going to church, and worryingly became really quiet and spoke very little for about a month. He browsed through lots of recommended Islamic websites. Probably this was the time when he really looked deep into his soul, and sincerely asked for God to be guided. Then he announced to her wife that he was ready to convert, or shall we say revert, to Islam.

My husband and I roped any help we could get from our friends to facilitate this wish. We went with Mr and Mrs Daly to the nearest mosque. My husband showed him how to do the ablution. And then, surrounded by their children and our friends, he testified his faith, that there is no god but Allah, and Muhammad is His messenger.

After this joyous moment he claimed that he felt really relieved and peaceful, like there was a big burden being lifted from his heart. The process continued with a formal wedding blessing according to Islamic Law. And this certainly had put a big cheerful smile on Mrs Emi's lips. She too felt relieved and grateful to ALlah. That night, Mike went to bed still reading the Qur'aan, and fell asleep with the Holy Book on his chest.

Mrs Emi's task is not yet finished. She, with all her children and her friends, still have to help Mike to learn more things about Islam and how to perform all the rituals. But she's always a strong lady, I'm sure she'll make it.

UPDATE (written on 15-12-2007):
Mike is now, Alhamdulillah, a practising muslim. He did fast all through the past Ramadhan even though he had some health problems.

UmmaAli's Journey to islam

Asalam Alaikum

Hello All

Today is story day, so I thought I would tell you all my story of how I came to Islam.

UmmAli's Journey to Islam
I took my shahadah(declaration to faith) October 2002. It was the best day of my life. If I got to live a day over and over again it would be that day. I was nervous and shaking so hard. I was sitting with the sisters and the Iman sent the microphone back to me. He asked me was I taking my shahadah with free will. He then helped me say the shahadah in Arabic then I said it in English. I now was a Muslim. I felt such a joy I can't explain. It was then time for prayer. My first prayer, I didn't even know how. I must admit I did know a whole lot about Islam at that point. But I knew in my heart and mind that it was right.

The story that leads me to this point actually starts in a bar. It was my 21st birthday, so like most people who turn 21 here in the US, I was off to the bar. I also had the intention of going home with someone that night. Well, I did go home with someone and after that we started to date. He was a horrible boyfriend. He was a true player if you know what I mean. But he had a really nice friend named Muhammad. Little did I know he was the one that pointed me out to his friend in the bar. He was just to shy to come and talk to me. His friend obviously was not. Muhammad did not like the way his friend was treating me, he was always telling him not to treat me that way. My boyfriend knew that Muhammad liked me and that I was sweet on him. So he started telling lies to both of us so we would not like each other. It worked. Latter me and boyfriend broke up. I remained friends with him. I went to the bar a little while later and there they were. I got a little to tipsy and was going to walk home. Muhammad would not let me. He took me home and took care of me. I was soooooooo sick. Even though we had been fighting, he still did not like to see me like this. We have been together ever sense.

After that we started to date seriously. Then we decided to get married. I then knew that I had to learn what my further husbands religion was about. My first thought was that I would try and convert him to Christianity. It was not like either one of us was really practicing our religion so I thought it would not matter to him. But he would not budge, he said that no matter how bad he sinned, he knew that Islam was the right religion.

So then I started to think about my religion. And what my future husband was telling me was so confusing from what I had believed all my life. So to make sure he was not telling me things just to get me to convert I stopped asking him questions and went to some Muslims at my work. They were so sweet to me. They explained that Allah(God) did not have a son. That God was one and only. And that Muhammad[SAW(Peace Be Upon Him)] was the last prophet. They explained the basic things in Islam to me. That just stuck in my heart. The rest of it I must admit I did not really understand. I just knew that Allah being one and only made so much sense, and that is when Christianity started to leave my heart.

I spent weeks praying to Allah(God) to help me. I was so confused. Then one day at work this feeling just hit me. I had been quite all day and my friend new something was up. I just told her that there was a lot on my mind. How could I explain what I was feeling. I didn't want to give in. How could I give up the religion I had know all my life. But in my heart I knew the what I had to do.

That is when I made my discion. I told my friend I am going to do it, I was going to convert to Islam. She was like really. But she could tell I was serious. When I got home I told Muhammad and he told me to take my time, to make sure this is what I truly wanted to do. I didn't want to wait, but he made me. Finally after me hounding him enough he took me to buy some hijabs. I did not feel right not being covered. I can't explain how it feels. I just felt so naked. He wanted me to wait till I took my Shanda, but I could not. I wore hijab for 2 weeks before I took my shahadah.

Muhammad took me to the masjidd. I was nervous and excited at the same time. I didn't want to leave his side, but I had to. He walked me to the womens entrance and I stood there looking at the door. When I walked in the sisters smiled at me and greeted me. I had no idea what they said or how to respond. I just smiled and nodded. The iman was giving the lecture and I was trying to listen but he was using so many Arabic words I could not understand half of it. After the lecture they were getting ready to pray when Muhammad stood up and said his fiancée was here to take shahadah.

Allahu Akbar, Allahu Akbar they all started to say. I was so scared at that moment I started to shake. The sister beside me realized it was me and took my hand. The iman sent back the mic and asked me was I doing this on my own free will. I said yes then he asked me if I knew what I was about to do, I said yes. Muhammad told him I didn't know how to say the shahadah in Arabic so the iman helped me. The sister beside held my hand strong and corrected me when I mispronounced something. Then I said it in English.

I am a Muslim now, I felt this feeling I can't explain. The sisters one by one started to hug and kiss me and congratulate me. I still know a few sisters from that night.

That day was the best day of my life, better then my wedding day, even better then they day my kids were born. I will always cherish that day.

I left that masjidd a Muslim. I came to Islam and my husband came back to Islam. We married two weeks after my shahadah.

I am not close to my family to began with so it was not that hard to tell them. I basically only had my mom and my brother and his wife. They all took it ok. My sister in law, tried to talk me out of it a little, but then seen I was serious and backed off.

I am now completely covered, all but my eyes. I also took a Muslim name, my old name was haram(not permitted). You see how one life can change. I was your basic half naked women in the bar to a Muslimah(Muslim Sister) trying to strive hard to gain Paradise. Don't ever count anyone out. You never know who Allah will guide. Allah has blessed me with this beautiful religion of Islam a wonderful husband and two precious children.

I would like to share with you my favorite ayah in the Quran. It means so much to me. It tells my story. Me am Muhammad were once enemies then Allah brought us together and save us both from the pit of the fire.

In the Name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful
And hold fast, all of you together, to the Rope of Allah (i.e. this Qur'ân), and be not divided among yourselves, and remember Allah's Favor on you, for you were enemies one to another but He joined your hearts together, so that, by His Grace, you became brethren (in Islamic Faith), and you were on the brink of a pit of Fire, and He saved you from it. Thus Allah makes His Ayât (proofs, evidences, verses, lessons, signs, revelations, etc.,) clear to you, that you may be guided.
Surah Ale-Imran (The Family of Imran)3:103

IT IS FORBIDDEN TO PERPETRATE ATROCITY UPON A MUSLIM, TO HUMILIATE HIM, TO INSULT HIM, AND INVIOLABLE IS HIS BLOOD, HONOUR AND WEALTH

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Book 32, Number 6219:
Abu Huraira reported Allah's Messenger (may peace be upon him) as saying: Don't nurse grudge and don't bid him out for raising the price and don't nurse aversion or enmity and don't enter into a transaction when the others have entered into that transaction and be as fellow-brothers and servants of Allah. A Muslim is the brother of a Muslim. He neither oppresses him nor humiliates him nor looks down upon him. The piety is here, (and while saying so) he pointed towards his chest thrice. It is a serious evil for a Muslim that he should look down upon his brother Muslim. All things of a Muslim are inviolable for his brother in faith: his blood, his wealth and his honour.

[Sahih Muslim]

The Date of the Fasting of Arafah

The date for ‘Eid al-Fitr and Eid al-Adha is based on sighting of the new moon

Question:
I have a question about the dates of the Eids...I know the Eidul Fitr is after the month or Ramadhan and there is always dispute amongst this day (some will celebrate it on the 29th, while others celebrate it on the 30th), but in regards to the Eidal Adha, does this day coincide with what the hujjaj are doing in Makkah, or can this day differ according to the different countries others are in?.

Answer:
Praise be to Allaah.

Firstly:

The difference among the Muslims with regard to determining the first day of Ramadaan and the time for Eid al-Fitr stems from the differences of opinion among the fuqaha’ concerning the well known issue, which is whether sighting of the new moon in one country becomes binding for all other countries, or should each country have its own sighting. This also applies to determining the date for Eid al-Adha.

This is a matter that is subject to ijtihaad, and each group of scholars has produced its evidence, and both groups may even quote the same text as evidence. This has already been discussed in the answer to question no. 1248.

The view that sighting of the moon in one country becomes binding for all other countries is the view of the majority of scholars, and was the view favoured by Shaykh Ibn Baaz (may Allaah have mercy on him), as is stated in Majmoo’ al-Fataawa (15/77).

The view that there may be differences in sighting between different countries is the more correct view according to the Shaafa’is, and was the view favoured by Shaykh al-Islam Ibn Taymiyah, and by Shaykh Ibn ‘Uthaymeen among contemporary scholars. We have quoted his fatwa in the answer to question no. 40720.

Secondly:

The differences among Muslims with regard to Eid al-Fitr and Eid al-Adha is based on this difference of scholarly opinion, and it is the same for both Eids. Shaykh Ibn Baaz (may Allaah have mercy on him) said, after mentioning the difference of opinion among the scholars about different moon sighting in different countries at the beginning and end of the month:

It seems to me that the differences in moon sightings do not matter, and that what must be done is to follow the sighting of the moon with regard to starting and ending the fast and offering the sacrifice when it is proven according to sharee’ah that the moon has been sighted in any land.

Then he said: Whether or not we say that differences in sighting are valid, it seems that the ruling is the same for both Ramadaan and Eid al-Adha, and there is no difference between them according to what I know of sharee’ah. End quote.

Majmoo’ Fataawa Ibn Baaz (15/79).

In the fatwa of Shaykh Ibn ‘Uthaymeen (may Allaah have mercy on him) referred to above, it says that differences in moon sighting should be followed with regard to Eid al-Adha just as they are followed with regard to the beginning and end of Ramadaan.

Based on this, there is no problem if Eid al-Adha is on Friday in one country and on Saturday in another, and so on, based on the differences in moon sighting.

The same may be said with regard to the fast of Ramadaan, fasting the day of ‘Arafah and fasting ‘Ashoora’, because these are things that have to do with the sighting of the moon, and the ruling on whether the month has begun or not.

And Allaah knows best.
