My Olympics, participation in canoe racing

Sister Maryam
CANADA

The day started by a small trip to a nearby traditional summer camp to visit an elder, he was doing well, out in the blueberry field, so I took very nice pics of the mountains and the flowers.

The community decided to honor the opening of the olympics by organizing different kind of activities, it was also the official announcement of the construction of a new clinic. So the clinic staff decided to participate to encourage people to be more active. There is a lot of diabetes secondary to obesity in First Nations communities.

As I mentioned earlier the olympic games started today, I really enjoy seeing people excel in their own discipline. Allah has given us the greatest machine, our body, but we tend to not always take care of it.It is our duty as muslim to preserve and take care of ourselves. There are clear directives from Allah regarding health.

As a nurse, I see more and more bad lifestyles like smoking, poor and unhealthy diets and lack of exercise being the cause of chronic illnesses. During our Prophet’s (pbuh) time, people had to exercises ,just to do their daily activities, imagine no running water, no heating and cooling systems, the necessity of gathering food, preparing meals from scratch etc. Now we tend not to exercise enough, that leads to obesity.

A lot of muslimahs struggle with that.It is not easy to find women only places to exercise, but simple walking will do.I try to stay fit and healthy because my work requires a lot of activities like climbing in small planes, boats etc.I participate in different sports that can be practiced alone.

This afternoon I went canoeing ,we had a race , an all women race, I am not very good at it, but it was fun, it felt great, and I’m dead tired, lol, for sure I am not going to be the next olympic champion !!

This is Georgina, my very competent canoe partner for the race, she works at the clinic as a interpreter.

And this young girl is a future olympian.

Some activists are trying to encourage all female athlete to participate in major sports event like Olympics. They organize campaign to get all countries to send women to participate Olympics games. Ever since the campaign was initiated in 1992 Olympics, the number of countries, which send only male delegations, has dropped from 35 to 5 countries in Sydney Games in year 2000. Out of these 5 countries, four are Middle Eastern countries.

Good news is that advances in sportswear may have actually helped to open up door for Muslim sportswomen in those countries, though by chance. For instance, the initial objective of full body swimsuit is actually to reduce water resistance, but these new gears have also enabled Pakistan female swimmers to participate in 2004 Athens Olympics.

This coming August 2008, Afghanistan will be sending a total of three athletes to Beijing. One of them is 19 years old Mehbooba Ahadyar. She will be runnning in the 1500 meter and 3000 meters. For her, winning is secondary. Seeing Afghanistan flag flying in Olympics will definitely make her proud. (Also competing will be Massoud Azizi in the 100 and 200 meters, and Rohullah Nikpah in taekwondo.) My salute to her after finding out how she actually trains in a country where women are barely allowed outside without a male escort. No nice gym and without good stadium. But only determination and the love of sports. I hope to see more Muslim women from those countries to compete. Moving ahead does not mean leaving their faith behind.

In my opinion, to go to Beijing, she has already won.
